WORD FOCUS: TRAPS AND TEMPTATIONS
TEXT: 1 Corinthians 10:13 “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Don’t think it strange if things in this world pull at you and tempt you. After all, the devil’s job is to set traps and toss temptations your way. But you can win! There is always a solution and a way of escape. Our verse this morning says, ”God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able , but with the temptation will also make a way of escape, that you may be able to bear it…”
I like the insight the apostle said, “If we live in the spirit, we shall find that all that is carnal is swallowed up in life”. The life of God will swallow up anything and everything carnal in our life. But let me tell you something important: God doesn’t decide if you will be full of the Spirit. You do! It’s totally and completely up to You.
The truth is, whatever you focus on the most will fill you, and whatever fills you the most will flow out of you. Unfortunately, a lot of Christians are not focused on God, so He is not able to fill them. They need one of those wake-up calls. They’ve lost their zeal which the Nelson Bible Dictionary defines as ‘enthusiastic devotion, eager desire and single-minded allegiance”.
Face fact. Too many Christians aren’t all that concerned about sin these days, ‘so and so couldn’t help him/her, they reason. Really? Sin is sin, my beloved. God has not changed; sin has not either. God is very explicit about it in His word and He says those who sin will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor. 6:9). That is straight forward.
The good news is that if you’re tempted in any area, remember that the fuller you get of God, the less the world will be able to pull on you. Someone might say, ‘but I can’t help myself’ Oh Yes you can! And God will help you, too. God plans to fill you up with Himself so things of the world drops off. In fact, the world can’t hold a candle to the excitement of the Creator of the Universe living inside you. The most important step to overcoming temptation is to admit the temptation to yourself. Decide to walk in victory. Get full of the Word and full of the Spirit and watch the temptation fall away.
