TOPIC: WISDOM IN THE WILDERNESS
TEXT: Proverbs 4:11 “I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths.”
The Hebrew word for “desert” is midbaar. It’s from the word dahbaar, meaning “to speak.” Let me draw from that root term and suggest that the desert is the place where God speaks, where He communicates some of His most important message to us? In Deut. 8:2, the scripture says God led the Israelites through the wilderness to humble and test them. Your desert experience might involve caring for an ailing family member or an elderly parent over an extended time, with no help at hand and no relief in sight. Your sojourn in the dry lands might be a stubborn physical condition that keeps you confined. It could be that deep soul-ache that comes with an unfaithful spouse, or a rebellious teenager. Does God know? Does He understand?
He understands very well beloved. After all, He’s the One who put you there. His schooling includes time in the wilderness.
That’s where He gets our attention and like He told Prophet Isaiah in Isa 43:2-4 “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee. Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.”. He is with you and will bring you out of your desert experience, because he created you and has redeemed you, you belong to Him and He knows each of us by name. You are precious and honoured in His sight, the objects of His great love.
