TOPIC: ONE THING IS NEEDFUL (1)
TEXT: Luke 10:42 “But one thing is needful and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her….”
In today’s world, we have over 500 channels on TV, an unlimited of sites to browse on the internet, cell phones and PDA’s to keep us connected 24 hours a day. Everywhere you look, there is something to do
or some kind of entertainment all the time. If we’re not careful, we’ll fall into the trap of thinking that we’ve always got to be busy doing something. Today, Jesus invites us to be still because really, only one thing is needed.
I heard somebody say one time, what if we treated our Bibles like we do with our cell phones? Can you imagine people in the elevators, lobbies and shopping malls thumbing through their Bibles all day long? Can you see people reading and studying the Word while sitting in traffic and at red lights? Not that you should do that, but the point is that we need to live our lives in balance and make the Word of God a priority. Now we tend to worry about more things at once because we get a lot of information at the same time, but from Gods perspective only one thing is Needful for man’s life…Wow only one thing. Proverbs 4:20-21 says: My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart;”
Four things we must do…
1) ATTEND- it means to regard show respect, esteem highly. You will only listen to something if you regard it or esteem it highly.
2) INCLINE: to stretch out, extend (Make the effort to hear). Go the extra mile to hear God Word, eliminate distractions, set a schedule for yourself to hear His Word.
3) KEEP LOOKING – don’t turn your gaze from it. Don’t look to the Word and get a second opinion from another source.
4) MAKE IT CENTRE PLACE: your decisions should come the wisdom Gods word brings. These actions consistently will change your life.
Whether you know it or not…or believe it or not you are always attending to something and inclining your ear to something. Beloved, you will not lose out when you take time to sit down and listen to God’s Word.
