WORD FOCUS: POWER AND BOLDNESS
TEXT: Acts 1:8 “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth….”
Fishermen can be picky about their rods and reels, and that is a good thing. If you are going to fish, you need the right equipment. Jesus also knew that you would need the right equipment when fishing for souls, so He gave you what you needed: power, boldness and the name above all names. Let’s look at them:-
POWER. In Acts 1:8 Jesus said, “…. ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth”. You could read it this way: You will receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and you will be fishermen in your neighborhood, your job, your city, your state, your nation, and the world”. How will you get the job done? You will be supernaturally equipped by the Holy Ghost – in His might, power, and ability. We need to overcome the mental block that says, “I am too shy to talk to people. What is the alternative? To let them go to hell? No. Jesus said we would receive power to witness, so we need to get out of our comfort zone and get busy for the Lord. When will the power come on me? Someone asks when you need it. The power won’t come on you when you’re home in bed while watching television or eating dinner. But when you open your mouth to witness, the power will be there. When you open your mouth wide, God will fill it.
BOLDNESS – God has a way of making people bold. Peter denied Jesus three times before he received the Holy Ghost, but Acts 4 also tell us about Peter after he received the Holy Ghost. Verse 13 says “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John,… they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” I love that! Peter and John had been with Jesus and it showed
THE NAME OF JESUS – Acts 3 tells how Peter and John were on their way to the temple to pray and passed a beggar who was crippled and sat there most of his life. But that day Peter and John looked at him and said, “Hey man, we don’t have money, but here’s what we do have! In the name of Jesus, rise up and walk!” He jumped up and began leaping and dancing and praising God. Later Peter said, “Now don’t think we did this all on our own, God raised from the dead the One you crucified and killed. He rose again, and now it’s in His name this man is healed and given soundness in the presence of you all.”That is the name above every name JESUS. God has given you power and boldness, you have all the equipment you need to reel in fish and you have a commission to go everywhere doing it. What more do you need? Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to a person who is ripe for the gospel message today. Love him or her, share the truth. First Corinthians 3 says some plant, some water and some reap. Do your part.
