WORD FOCUS: GOD HAS FEELINGS TOO
TEXT: HOSEA 1:8-9 “Now when she had weaned Loruhamah, she conceived, and bare a son…”
Along the line (probably two or three years) another son is born to Hosea and Gomer about whom God says call him ‘Lo-Ammi’ meaning ‘you are not my people’. The naming in this negatively way implies that God’s divine forbearance has reached its climax, ‘Not my people’ signals the fact that there has been a sea change in the divine intention towards the people of Israel. ‘God separates himself from them’. In scriptures, God often describes His relationship with His people in terms of marriage covenant. The expectation is love and fidelity between both parties: that is the whole purpose of a covenant. “The fact that God is speaking in human language of men and saying in effect: Look Israel I am hurting over your infidelities remember – I too have feelings. God really does suffer when we play fast and loose with him. When the people of God are tempted to turn from dependency on the Almighty and put their trust in other gods, we would I believe be less prone to failure if we remember that the most awful thing about infidelity is not so much that it breaks God’s laws, but that it breaks his heart. Divine love bleeds over sin and our failures, BLEEDS!
Genesis 6:6 says “And the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.” Psalm 95:10 says “For forty years I loathed that generation and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.”But there is something that overrides those feeling in the book of Isaiah 54:8, God says “In overflowing anger for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,” says the LORD, your Redeemer. ”
Infidelity breaks God’s heart. Dear Lord, help us realise that sin consists not merely in breaking your laws but breaking your heart. It hurts you. You are wounded by our wanderings, torn by our tantrums. Forgive us, dear Father.
