WORD FOCUS: GO FISH
TEXT: Matthew 4:19 “And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men…”
Jesus told two brothers one day, “I will make you fishers of men”. His offer still holds. Jesus will teach you to fish for souls if you will let Him. Some people love to fish just for fun, but there are serious fishermen like the disciples of Jesus, who really know what they’re doing. They know what kind of fish they are after and they know what it takes to catch them.
In the same way, we need the right bait to reel in souls for the kingdom. Jesus taught us about this in Luke 4:18-19 when He said “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord”.
What do the poor need to hear? They need to hear that they don’t have to be ‘poor any more’. They need to know “my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus”. (Phil.4:19). The brokenhearted need to know that Jesus mends heart supernaturally; He replaces sorrow for joy. Captives – those bound by addiction – need to know there’s freedom in Jesus. the blind need to hear Jesus still heals today, the bruised and abused physically or emotionally pain because Jesus bore their peace of mind just as much as He bore their sins and sicknesses(Isaiah 53:4-5)
Jesus listed these different kinds of “baits” because everybody has a story, and He offers Good News to them all. Whatever they need, God has it, there’s nothing too hard for Him.
It’s time to reel in some fish! If you are serious about fishing for souls, make this prayer: Father direct me to people who need to hear of Jesus. Teach me to be sensitive to your Spirit and sensitive to people, open my eyes. Let me not just pray for labourers but be a labourer. I give you my hands, my feet , my mouth, I will put my life and my schedule on hold anytime You prompt me. I will yield to your compassion and long for it to flow out of me in Jesus name.”
